Film Noir Analysis - Double Indemnity

Director: Billy Wilder

Camera: High angle shows the female protagonist has a dominant hold over the male. Subverts stereotypes. Close ups - audience can establish characters and emotions. Over shoulder and reaction shots. Mid shot. Two shots. Shows connection between characters.

Mise-en-scene: Black and white film. Men dressed in suits women in gowns/dresses. Main characters have the screen time. A door separates them the man stands protectively in front. Man at the beginning speaking on the phone - telling a story. (Action on screen matches).

Sound: Voice over of intro to the film. Non diegetic. Sound-bridge when man is on the phone. Dialogue of 'Murder' suggests plot of the film. Non diegetic violin music - sets sad, sinister tone.  The sound of the characters dialogue is lustful and protective - reinforcing their connection to each other.

Editing: Straight cuts, cross dissolve, long screen times.
