Final Promo Poster

I have made the changes that were advised to me by my teacher and classmates. Centering the couple draws more attention to them, and evens out the look of the poster. Like my magazine cover i have stuck to the same colour scheme in order for the audience to establish a connection between the three products. Similar to posters such as New Moon and Harry Potter, i have included a 'caption' from the film or a teaser that suggests what the film could be about whilst not giving away the plot. It also allows the audience to think about what could happen in the film, which is what i want them to do when they have watched the trailer. Will they ask questions about? What will interest them? I would like to get the same reaction from this poster. I have kept the same font, which is common in all promotional posters as it supports and connects the trailer and film. I think the image shows a connection between the characters, but does not reveal what type of relationship as the female is holding a gun, and has the red jacket on, which suggests that she is the one with blood on her hands. However i am hoping that this is ambiguous to the audience and does not give the 'game away' before they have even watched the film or trailer.

Final Magazine Cover

This is the 100% finished magazine cover. I have added depth to the image and shadows and tones to the text to make it blend in more with the page. I also corrected the spelling mistake. I am pleased with the final cover. I think it connects with the other products i have produced, for example i have kept with the black and white theme throughout, adding red into the ancillary tasks to suggest danger and set a mood to the film, whilst also adding extra colour. Although the image of the actress was a photograph, i have tried to make it look like a still shot from the film. This is so that it fits the codes and conventions of film magazines, such as Empire, where my earlier research shows that the actors are as their character on the cover (Wolverine) or a shot from the film has been incorporated onto the cover (Public Enemies screen shot). I didn't want the text to overpower the cover as i wanted it to be simple yet effective, which is the look i was trying to achieve with my Promo Poster. I feel I have managed to achieve a simple yet effective front cover to a film magazine, whilst incorporating conventions from the Film Noir genre and general film magazines such as Empire.

Final Cut 1

This is my final cut, however i am aware that some adjustments may need to be made after showing it to my teacher and class mates. I have also done the adjustments suggested to me when i showed my rough cut, such as taking certain shots out, reshooting shots and adding font onto a moving image, which was particularly challenging for me as i am not very skilled at After Effects. I think the trailer sets the mood for the film and has a narrative that the audience can follow, which is what was present in the trailers i studied (The narrative).

Feedback:

After showing this to my course teacher, i have only a few things to fix for the final piece. The titles need some movement such as fading in and out, similar to the name titles i have added later on in the trailer. I am happy that i have almost finished and will make the changes to it. I will also further develop my After Effects skills through doing this as well as fitting the codes and conventions of Trailers.

Promo Poster

This is my Promo Poster. The red jacket is to symbolise that she is the villian, but the pose is hard to establish what relationship they have as she is also holding the gun. The balck and white theme is to carry on the link with the trailer and magazine. I have used a caption instead of a review from a magazine, this is becuase i wanted to set an atmosphere for the film. Posters such as Harry Potter and New Moon also has captions to entice the audience. After a review of this poster, the couple need to be centered more, as they look more to one side. However overall i am pleased with the outcome of this poster. It is simple, the way i wanted it, but is also effective. The colour scheme and caption allow the audience to connect it with the trailer but also set the tone of the film.

Magazine Cover

For the moment, this is my finished magazine cover. I like the pose of the actress as it looks as if she is coming out of the page towards the reader. I have stuck to the three colour rule, using only different shades of those colours. Changing the photo to black and white makes it look like a screen shot from the film, which is what Empire film magazine did on their covers. I have also included teasers about the main article and other articles within the magazine. To catch the audiences eye further, i included competition teasers. I think the red glow behind the title on the black background brings the magazine toegther and makes it stand out. I also like the way the actresses hand is lit up in the fore ground with the gun in her hand symbolising it is an important theme in the film.

After a review from my teacher and class mates, i need to make a few adjustments to the final cover. The main comment was that the character looks flat and so i need to add a shadow to make her stand out from the page, and also the text needs to blend in more, which i could do with adding the same text behind in another colour to create a shadow. These are the adjustments i will make and then i will show it again for another review. I also realised that i need to spell the word Trilby correctly, as I did not see this mistake when i looked at. Which is also why a second opinion is helpful.

Photoshopping

Today, i put the photo's i took for my ancillary task and strted to design and make my promotional poster and magazine. I found this particulalry challenging as my Photoshop skills are not brilliant. It is importnat that the promo poster takes on the same codes and conventions of the film, i.e black and white. I cropped the couple out changed the colouring to black and white. I want the style of this poster to be simple but effective, to creat an air of mystery about the film. I think i have managed to create this however it still needs some considerable work untill i am happy with it. Ideally i would like the jumper the actress is wearing to stand out in red, the only colour that there would be on the poster. The magazine, is slightly different and only has a picture of Helen, the main actress on the cover, from the magazines i studied, the actress/actor was always in character, which is what i have directed the actress to here. She is pointing the gun at the camera, which although it makes her look as if she is coming out of the page, i am not sure whether it is suitable for a film magazine. I shall put the magazine up for peer assessment to see what they feel about it, as they are the audience i would be trying to attract. The magazine, at the moment has minimal font, as i need to research more about what is on magazine covers, and i also need to think about teasers for my cover that involves the film.

Photography

Today i did the first photographic session for my ancillary tasks. I started off with the main actress (Helen) and experimented with several mid shots of her, firstly with no props, such as the hat and the gun, so it looked like a shot from a normal fashion magazine. I then bought in the hat and gun, and directed her to pose differently and use the props. I think i was able to get the shot i wanted, but it could be hard to decide.

Then i did the shots using both characters for the promotional poster, in which i used both props. I based the positioning of the characters on the promo poster for Double Indemnity, which shows the closeness of the characters, whilst using props which could suggest deception of one another. I will use the shots in photoshop and edit them to the style i want. Here are some of the shots i took:

Although this is a very basic mock up, it shows the idea. The model will be central to the page to show she is the main feature and the texts around her will be about her and the film.

The font is the same as in the films. Im not sure whether the title should be in the same font. My reserach tell me not to have it the same.

The black and while colour scheme matches with the film and i will have some red colouring in the photo and font in the finsihed peice.

This is a very basic mockup of the promo poster using photoshop. I have used only black and white. The font matches that of the font in the trailer.

I Have included a 'review quote' underneath the title that the audience will be able to see after reading the title.

I took the drawing i did for the poster and cut the characters out to put them on the balck background to show was it will look like with the real people.

The poster is very simple, but i think this could be effective.

Mock Ups Of Magazine And Poster

I have drawn up a few rough sketches i want the promo poster and magazine to look like. Using the new skills i learnt on photoshop i will develop them further and use actual photo's.

These were mini sketches that display the first thing that came to mind. For the promo poster i want both characters being dominant on the page. The title will be in the same font as in the trailer. The female character will be holding the trilby hat. Their names will be next to them and a review from a magazine will be underneath the title. I will experiment with the photo, as i am not sure if a mid shot of the characters or long shot would be more efficient. I do however think that the photo should be in blackk and white, with a black background.

This is a rough sketch of the magazine cover. The model will be the female character from the trailer (Helen) and she will be in her dress from the film, and ideally holding or wearing the trilby hat. There will be text all around her showing that she is the feature of the magazine. I'm not sure what the colour scheme should be, but it will most likely be black, red and white to fit with the film.

Photoshop Tutorial No.2

This was my second tutorial, where i had to be more independent with the programme. I firstly took a picture of my model and uploaded it onto Photoshop. Then i changed the colour and layer style. I ran out of time to do much else, but i found it relatively easy to do, the only mishap that i had was trying to cut the model out, as the magic wand did not work and i had to use the polygon crop tool.

I also used the spot tool to edit out any blemishes the model may have had. It is important to position the model in the center of the page so the audience know they are the main subject of the magazine.

I will be using Helen, the main actress as the front cover of the magazine and both characters for the promo poster.

Photoshop Tutorial No.1

This was my first attempt at some photoshop work, using some of the more advanced tool.

I got a picture of a celebrity and cut him out using the magic wand tool. I then drag and dropped him onto a new page, and started to play around with the colour.

I made the background layer purple and this effected the changes made to the picture. I changed the layer styles and found one that i liked then added text and a drop shadow as well as an effect to the text called pillow which makes the text more 3D.

For my first attempt I think that the image looks good and could be improved with more images and text, for example the front of a magazine. I may consider using some of these effects when it comes to producing my actual ancillary piece.

Post Production

So far i have done at least three rough cuts. Each time i play them back to myself i find something that could be improved, or changed. I seek a second opinion as sometimes i am too critical of my work and therefore feel a different pair of eyes could be more effective.

The most difficult thing for me would be trying to match the music to the action on screen as well as trying to match finished music so that it flows more freely, otherwise there is a jarring feeling in the sound track.

I have sorted through all of the footage that i have, which is rather a lot. I have tried to use the best parts of the footage, and lots of shots had to be cut down to suit the mood i wanted to create in the trailer. I have learnt that in order to get the right amount of footage, it is better to film as if shooting a whole scene. Such as going through the motions of opening a draw and putting something on the surface, when all i need was a draw opening and something being take out. Things like this were learnt along the way and i found it easier to get the footage i wanted working in this way.

The post production stage proved very trying of my patience, as i struggled greatly to find music that picked up pace and caught audiences' attention whilst still showing the conventions of film noir. The image i had in my head was always different from what i was literally able to produce, however i experimented with different things and sometimes came away from my story board, which allowed me to come up with other ideas, such as the safe shot.

More Filming - 2nd February

This shoot was hopefully to bring all the narrative together for the trailer, thus making this a vital part of the filming process.

I used the envelope from the previous film shoots with Helen and covered it in fake blood, this will establish a connection between the Trilby and male actor as well as show them as lovers, thus establishing a plot.

I shot from various different angles, but i was limited with the space as the actor was very tall and i struggled to get everything important in shot and being visible. The space around whilst filming was also limited as i could not move back any further due to a wall obstruction.

I used artificial lighting again to give the effect of a shadowy, dark room, which reflects the mood and fits the conventions of Film Noir.

In all i think this shoot went well, in terms of i got everything done and I think a link will be able to be established by the audience on viewing. The filming also didn't take very long because i story boarded what i needed to do before the shoot, as i was not 100% sure on what i wanted to do.

26th January - More Filming

Today i reshot the gun and Trilby letter scene. I found an appropriate location for the gun, a safe. I also wanted to add extra props to link the characters together within the trailer. I used a brown Jiffy envelope and a black filofax for the actress to put into the envelope.

The filming of the safe was difficult as i had to position the camera and me inside a small wardrobe to see the Trilby opening the safe and being able to see the content. I shot several angles, this way i would be able to choose the best one when it came to post production. I also lit the inside of the wardrobe so that the shadows fell inside the safe, but you could still see the content on camera.

I also filmed a few shots of the female actress putting the items in the envelope. The most difficult part of this was making sure the word 'TRILBY' was clearly visible on the envelope and always the right way up on camera. Again i shot this from several angles to give myself a choice of the best one in post production.

I always wanted to develop the femme fatale further. I shot the female character putting on her red lipstick, whilst looking in the mirror. the idea is to have a cross dissolve into her other character, The Trilby. This will allow the audience to make a connection as well as show the female characters femininity and power that is shown in the love scenes aswell.

The issue with filming with mirrors is trying not to have you and the camera visible in the reflection, and also being able to get the angle you want. This was a challenge but i overcame it, with careful positioning. The shots filmed today will hopeful further develop the narrative without giving away too much.

Rough Final Cut

I have sumbitted this peice for critique to my course teacher and got some good feedback that i intend to use to improve this further.

My view of this peice was that it had vastly improved from my initial rough cut, but i was aware that it could still be greatly improved. I already re-shot alot of footage and this time used artificial lighting in order to create the dark shadow feel that is so common in the film noir genre.

Feedback:

- Narrative structure is alot better

- Text for titles is appropriate for genre

- Black and white also fits conventions

- Time between forst and second title is too long

- Shot one has a lighting issue.

Shot two needs to be revised. Would a killer really have a gun on the sideboard? Also focus is bad.

- Bar scene lighting is porr. Needs to be redone. Perhaps change location?

- Pace needs to be kept up

- Lampost shot moved to 2:00:07

- The title shot of 'Trilby' is not centered

- Try do reduce the length to a minute

After a discussion with my course teacher i set about planning the shots that needed to be redone and thought about how using different locations might be more beneficial. I want to add extra props in order to link the Trilby and the male character (Andy) together. I will also use and expriment with more shots in order to establsih their connection within the trailer.

Conclusion

The magazines i have looked at show that the main image should dominate the page and overlap the masthead of the magazine, and other features on the cover.

It can be a shot taken from the film that takes up the whole cover, or a posed shot with an added background featuring the colour scheme from the promotional materials of the film.

The teasers should relate to the main feature of the magazine but the odd one on other features within the magazine. It can also include freebies or downloads featuring film material.

It usually only features one character from the film. I should therefore use my actress on my front cover.

Keep to a three colour scheme, and use a font that is similar to the title of the film. Which would be a itallic script font.

Filming January 12th 2010

This was the last filming date scheduled before I focused completely on post production. I had to ensure that everything was done properly due to the fact it was my last filming session. I filmed the shot of the actress coming out of the door and dropping the gun again. The snow on the ground presented a challenge as it was slippery and the actress had to run away from a shot, i had to take safety precuations to make sure she didnt injure herself.

Taking advantage of the snow on the ground, i used the fake blood and splattered it around, making the 'murder' look more realistic. I also re-shot the actress taking her hat off, as the lighting in the previous shots of this was limited. This time i shot these first to avoid the rapidly fading light effecting my shots. I was able to use artificial lighting for when she walked out the door, which meant i could shoot that later on in the evening. I have learnt that you need to think of the environment that you are working in, and how it will affect your work. For example resheduling shoots because of weather conditions and shooting particular scenes first to avoid factor such as light affecting the shot.

After redoing these shots, I moved onto the couple shots of the main actress and actor. I decided to do away with the previous scenes i had shot, as i changed the actresses costume and had a better idea for the scene. This idea proved more difficult than i had anticipated, as i wanted to have the actopr pushed up againt a door which had a mirror on it, i had to enusre i wasnt seen it the mirror and also that the actress was seen in the mirror as she pushed him up against the door. This had to be shot several times because i couldnt get the angle right with the actors, i wanted the female to be seen more to show she was a more dominant figure in their relationship. Furthermore, i wanted to have another shot of the actor about to leave before being shoved against the wall, the issue i had was not breaking the 180 degree rule, which i managed to achieve and continuity, which will have to be ensured in post production.

Overall i think that the last film shoot went well, as i achieved what i wanted and was able to experiment with a few other things such as blood in the snow and different camera angles and techniques.

Issues With Filming

Due to hazardous weather conditions, i have been prevented from filming a large amount of footage that is set outside. I was also prevented from getting the equipment, however i have resheduled the filming date to Tuesday 12th January. In this time i hope to do:

I have also managed to get hold of a good quality camera, and this will hopefully mean i do not have to reshoot again.

Final Rough Cut

Becuase of the issue with getting a location for filming, i have had to wait untill this week to film the last bar shots. I have changed the music and edited in time with pace of the track, which i am pleased with. Allthough this subverts the common codes and conventions of Film Noir i think it is noticable as a film noir piece.

Editing - 6th December

I found another music track to put into my trailer and i feel that it will keep the audiences attention. I am pleased with the way the shots change on a beat because it gives it a sense of narrative that fits in with what is on screen.

I added another title screen for when the film is being released. This appears after the title of the film comes up and the music finishes completely. Overall i feel the tone of the trailer fits in with the codes and conventions of Film Noir because of the slow editing that still keeps the attention of the audience and the lighting. I have also subverted the common conventions through different use of characters and the way the trailer has been put together to make in more modern.

Re-shoot 29th November

Whilst in post production i decided that instead of the opening shot just being words on a screen, i should add a shot of the Trilby to establish it as the main prop of the film. I experimented with the camera and getting it to zoom in and out smoothly, i found this a bit of a challenge at first because the camera kept re-focusing, i also tried panning from different props to the Trilby hat, this was also hard because i kept jolting the tripod and it showed up on the playback. In the end i decided on a still shot of a CU of the trilby hat. I wanted the words 'Golden Pictures Presents' over the top however because of my limited skills on After Effects i found this difficult. I need to improve my knowledge in this area. I did manage to put the text over the top but when i imported it into Premier Pro it would not run smoothly, i will need to rectify this.

Back in post production i worked on editing the shots in time with the music, this is an important aspect of trailers because it grabs the audiences attention and is a vital convention of trailers which can set the mood for what the film will be. I originally found it difficult to edit in time with the music because i was worried that i would need to cut shots down considerably in order for it to change in time. However i was lucky that the start of the music fitted in all ready and it was a case of editing around this. I still need to find another track to pick the pace of the trailer up.

Reshooting - 24th November

Today i re-shot parts of the trailer that i felt could have been improved. This time I used added lighting in order to cast shadows on the props and characters to fit in with the conventions of Film Noir.

I found it difficult to film some of the scenes because i had to work with the rapidly fading light. For one of the shots the light was particularly limited and because there was no electricity i struggled to light the character and I had to find other ways of lighting it without electricity, i may have to re do this shot again.

I was happy with the overall shoot as i managed to work within the time i had, and i also experimented with different shots which i thought would improve the finished piece.

Rough Cut

Although this took a while to get uploaded and has a few unfilmed shots because i was unable to get the location in time, i think it gives a good view of what the final piece will look like.

I had trouble finding the music that gave the right feel to the trailer, however i finally found one that created a particular atmosphere whilst still linking into the genre of film noir. I have to refilm the two opening shots because I decided to change characters hair to brunette and in the first shots she is blonde, this i plan to do as soon as possible because they are not as important as the bar shots.

The titles might still end up on screen with the moving images, as this would fit into the genre of film noir more, as this happened in Gilda and Double Indemnity, specifically when the title of the film appears.

Overall i think this gives the inetended atmosphere, due to the music and the pace of the shots. I will need to make sure my Bar shots are filmed accurately and i need to adjust some of the shots with the shooting in, as the continuity does not flow that well, other than that i am happy with the out come of the rough cut.

ILP day

During this day i focused on getting my rough cut finished. There were some shots that i was unable to film such as the bar shots, however i was able to film the shooting scene. I think this went well as i have never had to shoot a scene where there is a sudden change to the character. I had to add blood to the victim after he had been shot but make it look real. I did this by filming the gun shot and then stopping the filming but getting the actors to stay where they were. I then applied the blood and carreid on filming. Whilst this looked good at the time i realised that the shooters arm moved and it was obvious when the two shots were put together. This i will have to refilm, but other than that it didn't look too bad. With the other shooting shots, i need to remember that what i need to do is priority, as the weather conditions weren't desirable i rushed the filming and realised i should have filmed certain things better when i got back to post production.

Post production of things i had previously filmed and put into Premier Pro went well. Using my storyboard i was easily able to slot the shots in which further allowed me to develop my rough cut. The shots which i hadn't yet filmed i kept my animatic shots in place. I also designed the titles, but after looking back at my previous research i think it would be better to have the titles on top of the moving images along with the voiceover, thus fitting in with the codes and conventions of the film noir genre.

I also re filmed the kissing scene, which went better than the previous time, however the battery in the camera was low and the actors and me were under pressure to get it filmed before the camera went dead. I have realised that sometimes working under pressure can produce the best work, and i am pleased with the out come of this film shoot. To further keep with the codes and conventions of the film noir genre i changed the shots to black and white.

Second Film Shoot

Today i conducted the second film shoot, which involved the love scenes. The female character was orginally supposed to wear a blonde wig, however i felt this spoiled the look of the seductive character. Whilst using the wig I encountered several problems resulting in having to adjust shot angles and distances becuase of the way it looked. I have decided to do away with the blonde wig because this ruined the natural beauty of the actress and did not set the right mood, using the wig made it look comical and this was not my intention. In doing this it is not completely avoiding the common codes and conventions of Film Noir, as it is supposed to be a modern take on the genre and i wish to subvert the common codes and conventions to make it unique.

I only encountered one problem with the technical equipment which was that it did not have a memory card therefore meant it only had 18 seconds of filming time. I resolved this by using the SD card from my photographic camera in the filming one.

Getting the set ready was an interesting task, as i have never had to prepare a set such as this. I had to pay attention to detail and ensure it looked right for the time period. I had to remove all forms of technology and modern clothing. I also had to make sure i wasn't caught in the reflection of the mirrors in the shots. I think i did well in the attention i paid to the set and the positioning of the camera, as i was not caught in the mirrors.

Overall i think this filming session went really well. The actors were believable, we finished on time and there were only a few technical glitches. I think that i could have filmed at various different angles to ensure i had a variety of shots to choose from as some were not good enough by way of not enough of the set could be seen, and therefore the audience may not be able to grasp the idea of the shot.

The music was hard to find for this as i didn't really know what tone i wanted to create. Modern day trailers include a suspense building soundtrack to intice the audience, however the film noir trailers that i analysed such as Gilda and Double Indemnity, has a very slow soundtrack, not always matching the action on screen although they did have a very deep male voice over explaining the story either from a male characters POV (Double Indemnity) or just a narration (Gilda). I think it would be an idea to use a voice over as this way i can use classical music to give it the film noir feel.

Finished Animatic.

I feel this builds a mood as well as narrates a storyline which is what the previous animatic lacked.

I haven't done anything with the editing as i was told it was well paced and it was just the music that needed adjusting. The dialogue still needs to be added but i will do that when i film it.

Rough Practise Shots

Using my storyboard, i decided to film a few of the beginning shots to see what they would look like. I am likely to use these in my rough cut and hopefully my final piece.

The location was at a house which was easily accessible which is why i chose to film these first. Problems i encountered whilst filming was that my actress was too tall for the tripod to get a top view of her. I therefore i had to find a solution to this, in which i held the camera whilst standing on a wall, however the high wind made it difficult to stay still.

I think the first shoot went well, I got the shots done that i wanted to and took a few test shots that will be redone on other locations. The costume looked good on the actress and her height was able to give the illusion i intended.

First Idea

I had a brief idea for my trailer, and drew up storyboard. I planned to use the codes and conventions of Film Noir but have a thriller storyline.

The main idea for this was to set it in a graveyard and use one of the main characters to play the manipulative character and the other the victim. However i felt this was too cliche and didnt obide by Film Noir enough. The title was too obvious and the story line didnt grip people i pitched it to. I therefore felt in necassary to rethink my idea and use more conventions of Film Noir as well as deciding an original idea and challenging myself to subvert the codes and conventions. In order to evoke a reaction from the audience i will consider a montage effect which is to show time in quick past editing which will also unfold a story (Eisenstein saw montage as a means of eliciting emotional responses from the audience. He identified five types, or levels, of montage: metric, rhythmic, tonal, overtonal, and intellectual, the latter capable of expressing abstract ideas visually.http://misbournemedia.com/mediatheorists.htm) This will help me in editing my trailer to gain a relevant response from the audience.

These codes and conventions of trailers have been drawn from trailers in general rather than specifically focusing on genre.

- Fades and cross dissolves are frequently used in transitions.

- Close ups and mid shots - establish connection between characters and recognition for audience, also doesn't reveal too much of the event on screen.

- Title of the film is always last.

- A short shot at the end of the trailer after the titles, (Most common in the Fantasy and Thriller genre).

- Patterned editing - Slow - quick - slow. This keeps the audience interested as they follow the trailer. (The majority of media products are created in established and repeated ways. Forest featured frequently, shows the film is set mostly outside - possibly dangerous. Lots of slow motion is used, this could show the significance of these events. Bella in the feotus position suggests she becomes vulnerable in the film. Another character stands up as she shouts for help - showing him to be the hero. The title for the film enters the screen at the very end after Jacob turns into a werewolf. This is so that it stays in the audiences mind. Vampires wear mostly black.

Mise-en-scene: Phone at the beginning and throughout the trailer, title on screen 'Don't answer the phone' allows the audience to establish the connection between the phone and the reactions people have when it rings. Different houses where certian events take place. Computer with red and green writing being typed, suggesting danger is ahead. The characters are a group of teenagers, thus showing it to be a teen thriller. Many shots have police in them also reinforcing its crime sub genre. The titles which zoom onto the screen are white and then turn to red and green. This could signify innocence being lost and danger and death is coming. The shots shown in the tariler are mostly in a night time setting, suggesting to the audience that this thriller is based at night, which is typically when most people can be afraid. The 'thing' that they are running away from is shown briefly throughout the trailer in snippets such as in reflections and running across the screen, making the audience want to see more.

Sound: Phones ring often throughout the trailer. Some are non diegetic. The voice on the other end is non diegetic and sounds dangerous and dark. This is inforced when the characters start screaming when the phone rings. The non diegetic music creates an atmosphere of danger as it is very sinister. There is diegetic dialogue which is jokey, subsequently contradicting the tone in which the trailer is setting. This is however changed when the female characters scream, thus connecting with the title. Gunshots can also be heard above the commotion on screen. Whilst a female character is talking, the on screen action matches what she is saying it is also a sound bridge to her dialogue. Voice over reading the taglines.

Editing: lots of fades are used to heighten the dramatic atmosphere. The editing is slow paced at the start then speeds up as the character puts the phone down, this is macthed with the non diegetic music.

Thriller Analysis - Hide and Seek

Camera: Extreme close up of main character at the beginning. Birds eye view of a girl on a roundabout. Midshots of converstations, Shot reverse shot and POV. With events in the film POV shots show audience what the Dad (De Neiro) is looking at and his reaction. These are shown in mid-shots. Close ups allow the audience to see facial expressions, Long shots make the audience want to be closer. Zoom on a door at the end of the hallway, low angle shot of little girl opening a basement door.

Mise-en-scene: Pink outfit on the girl at beginning establishes her gender, the roundabout and park setting shows she is young. Reflection of Dad discovering something in the mirror. Keeps audience at a distance. Majority of the location appears to be set in the little girls bedroom and a bathroom. When the titles appear on screen it is in scratchy childs handwriting, suggesting it to be the girls writing. Taglines such as 'If you want to know the secret, You have to play the game' entice the audience to want to know what the secret is. The screen titles match the writing seen on the wall when the Dad is in the bathroom. The audience can make connections through this. Low key lighting reinforces the genre of the film and builds the tension as the audience cannot properly see the surroundings. The title 'Hide and Seek' is reinforced at the end when the little girl opens a door to a basement and says "Come out, Come out, wherever you are' (diegetic sound). Flashing lights speeds up the pace of trailer.

Sound: Piano sound at beginning, carries on this way with diegetic dialogue over the top. The music changes suddenly when the Dad is in the bathroom, showing that this is a turning point on the film. The music is quicker and as particular events unfold the Dad starts asking more questions (Diegetic dialogue). Diegetic dialogue 'Imaginary Friends' from a woman on a phone connects with the little girl shouting 'Charlie, Charlie, Charlie!' Audience is able to establish a connection. The sound increases in volume as the trailer nears the end, and then goes back to being quiet. This shows the climax of the trailer, to grab audiences attention. The sound creates a commotion and panicked feel to the atmosphere of the trailer, this is reflected in the mise-en-scene and editing.

Editing: Straight cuts at first. Shot reverse shots of converstations between the dad and daughter. The length of the shots are evenly slow paced at the start which matches the non diegetic music. Fades to black are introduced as the action changes and snippets of events unwind on screen. The editing then quickens as does the music untill the film title appears on screen. After this a shot reasonably long in duration is shown, which holds the audiences attention for longer.

This section will be about what audiences expect from the different genres, and what the films themselves include. Through gaining an understanding of the genre and expectation, I will be able to identify what needs to go into my trailer.

Thriller:

This genre is characterised through fast paced editing, red herrings, frequent action, and the use of binary opposites such as the Hero and Villain. There are a number of sub-genres that can be put with a thriller, these include; Crime, mystery, action, horror etc. Thrillers typically keep audiences 'On the edge of their seat' and can involve plot twists and psychological games with the audience to make them think something is about to happen.

Romantic Comedy:

A light hearted genre, centered around finding true love and includes humerous plotlines. The basic plot is of two protagonists usually of the opposite sex who split up and then at the end get back together. The ending will typically have a 'Happy ever after' as this restores the equilibrium for the audience after it has been disrupted through the protagonists separation. There can also be a third character involved in the love line for example in Bridget Jones and her decision over two men fighting for her.

Fantasy:

Includes use of magic and supernatural forms as a basic element of the plot. It can include many myths or legends and has various sub genres, such as Thriller/Romance (New Moon), as well as the idea of a fanstasy world that cannot be seen by the real world i.e Harry Potter. Sometimes these worlds may come together (Enchanted and Harry Potter). Fantasies can be for young children, in the form of Fairy Tales or for older audiences with a Thriller sub genre.

Film Noir:

Cinematic term to describe a stylish Hollywood Crime Drama. It is associated with low key black and white style. Their is usually a female protagonist who is percieved to be manipulative towards men. Thus subverting a sterotype of women being helpless and innocent. Film Noir is also known for its use of wide angles and low angles camera shots, this gives the genre a recognisable look for the audience, as well as shadows cast over the actor such as blinds or banisters.

My Decision

I have chosen to do brief two (The Trailer with a promotional poster and magazine cover). This is because I feel that I will be not only learn valuable skills in editing and filming techniques, but also how to get the shots required in order to make it look like a trailer. This could be a difficult task because I will need to film a lot of footage as trailers are based footage from the whole film, therefore I will need to think of what the film could be about then shoot the main 'scenes'. From my AS coursework I have learnt that I need to hold shots for longer, as when it comes to editing the footage a majority of the shots get significantly cut down in length. I also feel reasonably confident about using photoshop for the ancillary tasks, it could also improve my photography skills.

I will need to research trailers from several genre's in order to gather an understanding of the common codes and conventions for trailers and the codes and conventions for different genres.

We had a variety of briefs to choose from, however these were the ones that caught my eye. I have been interested in advertising for a few years and I thought that this would be a great opportunity to experiment with it. However I do not know the first thing about using the software to produce the web pop-up. Although this could broaden my knowledge of using different software to produce various forms of media, it could slow me down in production and this is what I want to avoid. On the other hand, I have been interested in going into the advertising business. The radio advertisement will be a new experience for me, and the script will be interesting to write because it has to link in with the television advertisements.

The other option was the teaser trailer. My AS coursework was critiqued by my class mates and one thing in particular that they commented on was the fact that it looked more like a trailer than an opening. this made me think that maybe I would be better doing the trailer, because I am able to put a sequence together in the way a trailer would look. However, the amount of footage that would need to be filmed in order to get the trailer to look good is very time consuming. Although I think I might be able to pull it off because I enjoy using the camera and putting together sequences. I am fairly confident with photoshop, which is what will be used to make the magazine cover and poster. This will also help me further develop my skills as I am also interested in the Television and Film industry.
